ESWT - Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy for ED

Shockwave therapy is a medical treatment that has been around for many years, often used as a non-invasive treatment option for kidney stones and orthopedic injuries. Recently, urologists have begun using this therapy to treat ED, as a long-term treatment for underlying physical causes of ED, especially for patients who do not respond well to medication or do not want invasive treatments.

Aside from penile implants, techniques that include medication and injections represent on-demand treatment options, with ESWT therapy being an alternative. Inadequate blood supply to the penis is a common underlying cause of ED and ESWT may work best for people with this condition, as experts believe it increases blood supply.

How does it work?

ESWT for ED works by applying low-intensity shock waves to the penis. During the treatment, a small wand-like device uses targeted sound waves to stimulate penile tissue and encourage blood flow (angiogenesis), which can also speed up the healing process. Low-intensity shockwaves have also been shown to grow new blood vessels and improve blood flow in the penis, which is essential for erections.

People do not usually need an anaesthetic, but they may experience a tingling sensation in the treatment area. The doctor will apply a set amount of shocks per minute, for a fixed amount of time, typically 15–20 minutes over a course of repeat treatments.
